Student-athletes from the Central Connecticut athletic programs welomed area elementary schools to their first day of class on Tuesday. Blue Devils teams were at Smalley Academy and the House of Arts, Letters and Science in New Britain.
The CCSU volleyball team, which has held school supply drives and visited the Smalley Academy annually, was at the school as it welcomed its students into a new building for the school year. The men's basketball team greeted students at The Roosevelt Campus H.A.L.S Academy. The student-athletes cheered on and welcomed back the elementary students with high-fives and words of encouragement to begin the new year.
"This is a fun day for our team to come out and encourage the kids on their first day of school and interact with them," said CCSU men's basketball head coach Donyell Marshall.
"We've been coming to Smalley regularly and it's always great to interact with the students and teachers," said CCSU volleyball head coach Linda Sagnelli. "The excitement in the air for a new school year and a new building was really inspiring and it was so fun to be a part of such a special day for the school and the students."
In 2018-19, CCSU student-athletes spent 4,500 hours in the community through activities such as welcoming students back to school, visiting elementary schools to read with students, and the Ana Grace Project: Finish the Race.
