Neumann and Connolly Earn Weekly NEC Honors

Senior Nick Neumann and freshman Kevin Connolly were named the Northeast Conference Pitcher and Rookie of the Week this week.  Neumann won his third game of the season and Connolly was almost perfect in relief as the Blue Devils went 5-1 last week, including a four-game sweep over Wagner.

Neumann was sharp for the Blue Devils in a 2-1 extra-inning win in the second game of a Friday doubleheader. Neumann pitched all nine innings to record his third win of the season, dropping his ERA to 3.06 on the year. Neumann scattered six hits and struck out five batters in the victory. He allowed just a seventh inning run.

Neumann retired the first nine batters of the game before Wagner put a runner on with a base hit in the fourth. He faced five batters in the inning and then retired the side in order again in the fifth inning, and faced just four batters in the sixth. After allowing the seventh inning run Neumann retired seven of the final eight batters he faced, allowing just one base runner (on a HBP). He retired the last five hitters to earn his third win of the season.

Connolly was spectacular in his three appearances on the mound this week, and perfect in his appearance vs. Wagner on Saturday. Connolly picked up his first collegiate win pitching a perfect 3.2 innings in relief. In fact, Connolly recorded 11 outs while facing just 10 batters in the game. Connolly entered the game in the fourth inning and induced an inning ending double play to get out of a jam in a 0-0 game. He then went on to retire the final nine batters be faced in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. He struck out two in his appearance.

For the week the freshman allowed only two hits in non-conference action while pitching a total of 6.2 innings in three appearances. Against UConn he allowed only one hit and helped the Blue Devils get out of a jam in the eighth inning with an inning ending double play. Against Stony Brook Connolly faced just seven batters in two innings and allowed only one hit and again induced a double play. The freshman sports an ERA of 1.72 on the season in nine appearances.
