Baseball Rallies Past Maine, 6-3

The Central Connecticut baseball team rallied with three runs in the ninth inning to get a 6-3 win over Maine on Sunday at Delray Beach, FL. Seniors Franklin Jennings and Tyler Coleman each collected three hits to help the Blue Devils pick up their third win of the weekend.

CCSU is now 4-1 on the season, while Maine slips to 3-4 overall.

The Black Bears jumped out to a three-run lead with a run in the first inning and two more in the second. Jeremy Pena knocked in two runs, while Danny Casals drove in the other as Maine led 3-0 into the top of the fifth inning.

The Blue Devils evened the score with three runs in the fifth inning. Junior Ron Jackson led off with a double and moved to third on an error. A walk to Jennings loaded the bases with no outs. Coleman singled in the first run and junior Dean Lockery followed with a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run and make it 3-2. Junior Ryan Costello followed with a sac fly to bring in a run and tie the score, 3-3, before Maine was able to avoid further damage.

CCSU would open the top of the ninth with back-to-back singles by Jennings and Coleman followed by a walk to Lockery to load the bases. Costello was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run. After Maine cut down a run at home for the first out of the inning, freshman Buddy Dewaine drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double to make it 6-3.

Sophomore Jared Gallagher, who worked 2.1 scoreless innings, would work around a two-out single in the ninth to close out the game and get his first win of the season.

Dewaine and Jackson added two hits apiece for CCSU, while Costello and Dewaine had two runs batted in each.

Central travels to Oklahoma for a four-game series on March 3-5, with a doubleheader on Saturday.
