The 18th-ranked Oklahoma baseball team swept a doubleheader from Central Connecticutin on Saturday. The Sooners took the first game, 13-2, before holding off CCSU, 6-1, in the night cap.
The Blue Devils slip to 4-4 overall following the losses, while Oklahoma moves to 12-1 on the season.
The teams wrap up the four-game series with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. Eastern.
Game 1: Oklahoma 13, CCSU 2
The Sooners hit four homeruns in the day's first game and they built a six-run lead to extend their win streak. The Blue Devils got two hits apiece from juniors Dean Lockery and Dylan Maher at the plate.
Oklahoma scored twice in the bottom of the first and added three more runs in the fourth inning to build a quick lead. Steele Walker had an RBI double in the first and hit a three-run homerun in the fourth to power the Sooners' offense.
Central got on the scoreboard in the seventh. Senior Franklin Jennings doubled to lead off the inning. A single by Lockery would bring Jennings around to make it 6-1. OU would add three runs in the bottom of the seventh before CCSU got another run in the eighth.
Freshman Buddy Dewaine reached on an error to lead off and moved to second. A single by Maher put runners on the corners and freshman Terry Bowens brought in a run on a fielder's choice to make it 9-2.
Jeremiah Adams hit a grand slam in the eighth and Oklahoma closed out the game in the ninth after CCSU loaded the bases with one out. The Sooners managed to work out of the jam without damage to seal the win.
Sophomore Mike Appel started and took the loss for CCSU. He allowed four runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work. The Blue Devils would churn out seven hits in the game, with Lockery, Maher and Jennings all hitting a double.
Walker would finish the day 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs for the Sooners. Kyle Tyler started and went 4.0 innings. He allowed one hit with four walks and four strikeouts. Austin Kerns worked 3.0 innings in relief and was credited with the win. He allowed one run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
Game 2: Oklahoma 6, CCSU 1
Oklahoma held off the Blue Devils, 6-1, in the second game of the doubleheader. OU built a three-run lead and after CCSU got a run back, the Sooners tagged on three more runs in the late innings to seal the win.
The Sooners got a pair of runs in the third to open the scoring when Brandon Zaragoza scored on an unearned run and Kyle Mendenhall singled in a run to make it 2-0.
Oklahoma loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth and a walk to Zaragoza brought in another run to make it 3-0. CCSU starter Andrew Hinckley managed to work out of the jam by retiring the next three batters to end the inning.
Central got a run back in the fifth after junior Ron Jackson hit a one out single and then moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, junior Nick Garland singled to right center to drive in a run and make it 3-1.
Brylie Ware singled in a run in the sixth and Renae Martinez hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to increase the lead to 5-1. Mendenhall would drive in another insurance run in the eighth on a sac fly to close out the scoring.
The Blue Devils finished with four hits in the game. Garland had two hits and drove in a run. Hinckley took the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, in 5.0 innings of work. He allowed five hits, while striking out eight and walking two.
Mendenhall drove in two runs for OU, while Zaragoza had two hits and two runs scored. Austin Hansen got the win for OU. He started and went 5.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
