Baseball Falls to UMass on Tuesday Afternoon

Central Connecticut fell to Massachusetts, 15-0, on Tuesday afternoon at CCSU Baseball Field in a non-conference matchup. The Minutemen scored in each of the first four innings to down the Blue Devils. CCSU slips to 16-13 overall, while the Minutemen are now 7-17.

Central returns to action with a three-game Northeast Conference series at Mount St. Mary's on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.

UMass jumped out of the gates with two runs in the first inning. Brett Evangelista reached ater he was hit by a pitch to lead off. He moved to second base on a sacrifice before Ryan Lever followed with a homerun to left field to make it 2-0.

The Minutemen added to their lead in the second inning. Dylan Robinson singled home Andrew Noonan to make it 3-0. UMass would put runners on the corners with two outs for Lever who would deposit his second homerun of the afternoon over the left field fence to make it 6-0.

Cooper Mrowka led off the third with a double and scored to make it 7-0 before UMass erupted for six runs in the fourth inning. The Minutemen recorded six straight hits in the inning, including a two-run triple by Nolan Kessinger. He came across to score one batter later to make it 13-0. 

UMass would add a pair of runs in the sixth inning to round out the scoring on the day.

A trio of Blue Devils had multi-hit afternoons. Senior Franklin Jennings had a pair of singles along with junior Dean Lockery, while junior Mitch Guilmette had a single and a double.

Freshman Arik Sypher started for the Blue Devils and took the loss. He struck out one batter in 1.2 innings o work

Kevin Hassett started and earned the win on the mound for the Minutemen. He scattered seven hits across 6.0 innings, while walking three and striking out three.

Lever finished with three hits and drove in six runs. Mrowka added three hits and scored three runs

The Blue Devils travel to Mount St. Mary's for a three-game Northeast Conference series beginning Thursday.
