Here are some notes on the Blue Devils heading into the 2013 season opener:
It is football season once again and the Central Connecticut Blue Devils open their 75th season of play against the #15/19 Dukes of James Madison University. This is the second time that the Blue Devils have visited Harrisonburg, Virginia and Bridgeforth Stadium. The Blue Devils last visited James Madison during week two of the 2011 season with James Madison earning a 14-9 victory. Also of note, this is the fifth time in eight seasons under head coach Jeff McInerney that the Blue Devils will open on the road.
The Blue Devils and Dukes have played only once, in week two of the 2011 season. James Madison won that meeting 14-9 at Bridgeforth Stadium in front of a then stadium record crowd of 25,102.
2011: #17 JMU 14, CCSU 9
The last time these teams played on this field the Blue Devils nearly upset the #17 ranked Dukes. The only score of the first three quarters was a JMU passing touchdown with 5:09 left in the first half. With 12:53 left in the game, CCSU connected on a field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3, but JMU answered with a touchdown making it a 14-3 game with 3:10 left to play. The Blue Devils continued to battle and were able to punch in a rushing touchdown in the final seconds, but it was not enough as they fell 14-9 in front of a stadium record crowd of 25,102 fans.
1,000 Yard Rushers
Last season, Rob Hollomon produced the 12th 1,000-yard rushing season in Central Connecticut football history. Nine different players have reached the 1,000-yard mark, with Harold Brown being the first in 1967. Hollomon rushed for 1,104 yards, which ranks sixth in progam history. In 2006, Justise Hairston set the program record with 1,847 yards on 277 attempts.
Rob Hollomon's Preseason Honors
Junior Rob Hollomon was named Third Team All-America by The Sports Network at the All-Purpose position. Hollomon also was named to the CFPA's Kick Returner of the Year watch list. Most recently he was named a Preseason All-Northeast Conference selection at running back and kick returner.
100+ Rushing Yards
The Blue Devils have rushed for 100+ yards in 23 consecutive games. The last time CCSU failed to reach 100 rushing yards was Nov. 6, 2010 against Robert Morris.
Rob Hollomon finished last season with five straight games of 100+ rushing yards and 200+ all-purpose yards.
On the Road Last Season
The Blue Devils finished last season with an 0-5 record in road games.
Vs. Ranked Opponents
Under head coach Jeff McInerney, CCSU is 1-7 all-time against ranked opponents. The lone victory came in 2006, when the Blue Devils topped #13 Georgia Southern by a score of 17-13. That win propelled the Blue Devils into the national rankings for the first time in program history.
Jeff McInerney • Eighth Season (44-33)
Head coach Jeff McInerney is currently in his eighth season at the helm of the Blue Devils, and has posted an impressive 44-33 record. He is the first head coach in the 70 years of CCSU football to post a winning record in each of his first five seasons. He has posted undefeated seasons at home four times in his six years (4-0 in 2006, 5-0 in 2008, 4-0 in 2009, 5-0 in 2010).
