The Central Connecticut men's basketball team dropped its third straight game falling 71-69 at home to St. Peter's University on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils led for the entire game, before a shot with 11 seconds left in the game gave the Peacocks the victory. St. Peter's scored the game's final five points and held Central scoreless for the last 2:55.
A late shot by sophomore Kyle Vinales was just off the mark as the Blue Devils fell to 1-2 at home this season. Vinales had a shot to tie with two seconds on the clock but the shot went in and out.
Sophomore Adonis Burbage led the Blue Devils with a career-high 25 points in the loss. He made five threes in the game and added five rebounds and a pair of blocks.
With the loss the Blue Devils are now 4-6 overall. St. Peter's is 6-6, including a pair of wins over CCSU.
Central led the entire game, but the Peacocks went on a run in the second half to overcome a 14-point deficit in the final 10:44. They outrebounded the Blue Devils 51-32 including 24 offensive boards. That led to 26 second chance points for the Peacocks.
The Blue Devils turned the ball over just 12 times and shot 43.9 percent from the field in the loss. They were 7-of-16 from three and 12-of-17 from the line.
St. Peter's shot just 36.1 percent from the field and 7-of-19 from three, while turning the ball over 15 times. Trailing 56-42 with 10:44 on the clock they outscored Central 29-13 to finish the game.
Vinales had 16 points for Central, while adding a pair of assists and three steals. Classmate Malcolm McMillan added 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals without committing a turnover.
The loss for Central is the third straight, and they head to #9 Syracuse on Monday for a 3 p.m. tip. The game will be televised on ESPNU and can be heard online at iHeartRadio.com.
