Men's Golf Finishes Second at Lafayette Invitational

The Central Connecticut men's golf team shot 292 on the second and final day of the 2014 Lafayette Invitational on Monday and finished in second place overall.  Central shot 306 on the first day on Sunday and improved 14 strokes on day two.  They finished just three shots behind tournament winner Longwood with a score of 598.


The Blue Devils shot a day two team score of 292, the best round of the entire tournament from any team.   All four scoring players for CCSU shot a day two 73 (+2)  The tournament was played at the par-71 Silver Creek Country Club.  The course is 6,635 yards long.

Longwood was first (595) followed by CCSU (598), Hofstra (601), Bucknell (609) and Drexel (610) rounding out the top five schools.  There were 15 total teams in the tournament.

Senior Matthew DeJohn matched his Sunday 73 with a 73 on Monday, finishing at +4 (146) in a tie for third place overall.  DeJohn had one birdie and three bogeys in the final round.   Freshman Nick Direda took two strokes off his day one total and shot 73 on Monday, finishing at +6 (148) for the tournament.  He was tied for eighth.  Junior Monte Mullen also shot a 73 on the second day, he finished tied for 16th place overall.  He improved five strokes on his first round score.

Freshman Matt Hills improved seven strokes on Monday and shot 73 (+2), finishing at +11 (153) for the tournament and tying for 24th place.  He had two birdies and four bogeys in his round.   Freshman Bryant Bolden shot 77 on day two, six strokes better than day one, and finished at +18 (160), tying for 70th place.

The second place finish marks the fourth top-five finish of the 2013-14 season for the Blue Devils.  In the fall they finish third at the CCSU Invitational, fifth at the UConn Connecticut Cup, and then first at the NEIGA Champsionships.

They return to action at Fairleigh Dickinson on April 13-14.  The tournament is being played at Crystal Springs Country Club in Hamburg, NJ.
