Central Connecticut junior goalkeeper Josef Abele was named the Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week on Monday. Abele and the Blue Devils are the only 3-0 team in NEC play through the first three games of the season.
Abele posted a clean sheet in Central Connecticut's lone game of the week, preserving a 1-0 victory over NEC preseason favorite Fairleigh Dickinson.
Helping the Blue Devils move to a perfect 3-0-0 in conference play, the junior goalkeeper made a season-high nine saves against a Fairleigh Dickinson side that had yet to suffer a shutout this season.
Abele turned in arguably his best performance of the season to make Jose Gamboa's 5th-minute tally hold up as the game-winner. Abele turned aside three shots on goal over the game's final 17 minutes as FDU scurried in an attempt to find the equalizer.
Abele now has five shutouts on the season as the Blue Devils are 6-5-1 overall. Central is 6-1-1 in its last eight games, including six via the shutout.
They play again on Tuesday night, hosting Army beginning at 7 p.m. Fans can watch the action live on www.NECFrontRow.com.
