Men's Track & Field 3rd After NEC Opener
The Central Connecticut men's track & field team is currently in third place after the first day of the 2012 Northeast Conference Outdoor Championships. The Blue Devils posted 39 team points on the meet's opening day.
Monmouth leads the field after a 71 point performance. Central trails second place Sacred Heart (41) by two points and leads fourth place LIU Brooklyn (26) by 13 points.
Senior Sam Alexander sealed the 10,000m individual championship running the event in a time of 31:36.04. Alexander placed ahead of St. Francis (PA) distance runner Chris Mills by a narrow .17 seconds.
Highlighting the field events for Central was senior Matt Berube who earned gold in the high jump with a 2.04 (6'8.25"). Berube sealed the event's individual championship with his performance and finished 1.25 feet ahead of the event's runner-up. Berube contended in the long jump as well earning the runner-up position with a 7.24m (23'9.00") jump. The distance was a personal best mark for the senior.
Junior sprinter Aaron Radden qualified for the 100m (10.78) and 200m (21.43) events. He ran the fastest time in the 200m preliminary round. Freshman Jamal Fruster will advance to the final round of the 400m with his performance (48.90).
Junior Colby Delbene (3:58.60) and freshman Brian Biekert (3:58.53) both qualified for the 1500m finals. Delbene was the top finisher in the heat. Junior Nick Lindblom advanced to the final rounds of both the 110m hurdles (15.21) and 400m hurdles (55.28).
