Two members of the Central Connecticut men's track and field team competed at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, NJ on Friday. Sophomore Brian Biekert shattered the CCSU steeplechase record and freshman Joseph Gioielli also broke a CCSU record in the 800 mile run.
Biekert, who completed the 3,000m steeplechase in 8:59.11, earned a silver medal for his performance and ousted the old record (9:03.24) held by David Kintzing since 1980. Biekert earned the second-place honor in a field of 34 competitors.
Gioielli, who has had an impressive freshman year with the Blue Devils thus far, broke the CCSU record in the 800 meter run with his time of 1:51.33. He surpassed the old record of 1:52.12 set in 2010 by Mohamad Hrezi. He crossed the finish line in ninth place out of 50 runners.
The Blue Devils will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 20, at the Holy Cross Invitational and the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational.
