Freshman Austin Trainor of the Central Connecticut men's track and field team ran 9:30.68 and placed fourth overall in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the 2015 USATF Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday evening. The meet was held at the historic Hayward Field in Eugene, OR where Trainor competed against 17 of the best junior athletes in the nation in the event.
Trainor was the runner-up in the steeplechase at the Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships this spring, posting a time of 9:35.05 to help the Blue Devils win their second consecutive NEC outdoor title. As a freshman this spring, he also placed second at the New England Outdoor Championships after running a personal-best time of 9:12.05.
The USATF Junior Championships are limited to athletes who will not turn 20 years old until at least 2016.
The top two finishers in the race automatically qualify to be members of Team USA at the Pan American Games. With the fourth place result, Trainor will now go through USA team processing to possibly be an alternate in the event for Team USA. The track and field events for the Pan American Games will take place July 20-26 in Toronto, Canada.
