Thomas Lupoli of the Central Connecticut men's cross country team earned Northeast Conference weekly honors after his performance at the Marist Invitational this past weekend (Aug. 30), the league announced Wednesday. The sophomore was named NEC Athlete of the Week in recognition of his 10th place finish out of 52 participants at the meet.
Lupoli's top-ten performance paced the Blue Devils to a third place finish out of four teams. He was the first Blue Devil to cross the finish line with a time of 19:46.80 over the 6,000 meter course. The meet also featured MAAC preseason favorite Iona, Marist and Vassar College.
The Sheehan High School product picked up right where he left off from a season ago. The Blue Devil earned two NEC Rookie of the Week awards in his freshman campaign, including one after the ninth place finish in his cross country debut at the Father O'Neil Invitational on Aug. 31, 2013. The second weekly award came after his 24th place finish in the JV heat of the NEICAAA New England Championships on Oct. 12, 2013. The event featured 241 runners and Lupoli was the first to cross the finish line and represent not only Central Connecticut, but the Northeast Conference.
The Blue Devils are set to return to action on Saturday, Sept. 20 when Central travels to Iona to compete in the Iona Br. Doyle Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, NY. The men's race is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m.
