The Central Connecticut men's cross country team finished seventh at the New England Championships on Saturday. Central's top-five scoring runners tallied 289 points for the team. The Blue Devils were led by junior Tyler Raymond and his 24th place finish.
The 8k race was held at Franklin Park in Boston, MA and featured 39 teams and 262 total runners. CCSU was the defending champions of the event as they defeated a 41 team field a year ago to collect their first ever New England Championship title.
Tyler Raymond and senior Patrick Hubbell led the way and were the only Blue Devils to crack the top 50. Raymond finished in 24thplace with a time of 25:03.56 and Hubbell finished 33rd with a time of 25:11.49.
Rounding out the five scoring runners for CCSU were freshman Colin Sauter, junior Matt Walker and sophomore Thomas Lupoli. Sauter finished 60thoverall and was the fifth freshman to cross the finish line in the entire race. He completed the course with a time of 25:24.64. Walker finished right behind Sauter with a time of 25:26.92, which was good for a 66th place finish. Lupoli crossed the finish line in 106th place with a time 25:48.05.
Sophomore Ryan Hertzog and freshman Brendan Callahan also competed for the Blue Devils in the race. Hertzog finished in 123rdplace with a time of 26:00.85 and Callahan finished in 140th place with a time of 26:07.84.
The Blue Devils finished in seventh place behind co-meet champions Providence and Brown (72 points), New Hampshire (148), Dartmouth (160), Boston (182), and Northeastern (247). CCSU finished 24 places better then the next team representing the Northeast Conference (Bryant – 31st).
Central Connecticut will return home for their next scheduled meet on Oct. 24 for the CCSU Mini Meet. The race takes place at Stanley Quarter Park, which will also be the site of the 2014 Northeast Conference Championships on Nov. 1. The shotgun for the men's race is scheduled to go off at 4 p.m.
