Following an impressive showing at the New England Championships, senior Roberto Piotto and freshman Elias Field from the Central Connecticut men's cross country team swept the Northeast Conference weekly awards. It was announced by the league's office Wednesday afternoon. Piotto was named the NEC Athlete of the Week for the second time and Field earned the Rookie of the Week honors for the third time.
Piotto earned the bronze medal at the meet after a third place finish in the men's 8K with a time of 24:46.9 in a field of 170 runners. Piotto has earned a medal in two of the three meets so far this season.
Field was the third Blue Devil to complete the course clocking in at 25:54.0 in 40th place. He was the first freshman NEC runner to finish the race. The Woodbury, CT native beat his previous personal best time by almost two full minutes.
Senior Richard Grudzwick joined Piotto as a Prime Performer. He recorded a new personal best in the 8K with a time of 25:23.7 with a top-20 finish at the meet.
As a team, Central finished seventh out of 25 schools at the meet. The men's cross country team hosts the CCSU Mini Meet on Friday, Oct. 25 in Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, CT.
