Four Blue Devils Named ECAC DI All-Stars

Four members of the Central Connecticut softball team have been named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I All-Star team, the ECAC announced Wednesday. Northeast Conference Player of the Year Kat Malcolm earned first team honors while teammates Arielle Bruno, Laura Messina and Nicole Springer were named to the second team for their outstanding performances throughout the 2013 season.

The mission of the ECAC All-Star Program is to recognize the student-athletes at ECAC member institutions who have been the most outstanding in competition over the course of the season in selected sports sponsored by the ECAC. The Division I Softball All-Stars are comprised of student-athletes from 88 Division I member institutions and award winners are selected based on a vote of ECAC Division I coaches.

Malcolm adds the honor to an impressive list of accolades earned during her sophomore campaign including NEC Player of the Year, NEC Most Improved Player, Capital One Academic All-District and NFCA Division I All-Region. Malcolm was also named to the All-NEC First Team and the NEC All-Tournament Team. She completed the 2013 season with record-breaking totals of 74 hits, 50 runs and a .420 batting average. She also tallied 10 home runs, 12 doubles, 40 RBI and a .659 slugging percentage.

Bruno completed her junior season boasting a .344 batting average, 56 hits, 10 home runs, 11 doubles and one triple. Among her many 2013 accomplishments, including breaking the CCSU career record for most runs scored (120), she was also named to the All-NEC First Team and the NCAA All-Regional Team.

Messina completed her sophomore campaign as the winningest pitcher in CCSU history, accumulating 50 wins in just two seasons. She registered a 1.87 ERA, 28 wins, 12 shutouts and 246 strikeouts in 2013. Not only did she break five Central single-season pitching records, she also shattered the CCSU career shutout record, currently holding it with 19, as well as the career strikeout record which she now holds at 453. She was also named to the All-NEC First Team, NEC All-Tournament Team and earned NEC Tournament MVP.

Springer capped of her senior year with impressive numbers as she posted a .369 batting average, 52 hits, 10 home runs, 13 doubles, 41 RBI and a .674 slugging percentage. She completed her career tied twice for the single-season home run record and ranked in the top four in four career offensive categories after just two years as a Blue Devil. Springer was also named to the All-NEC First Team and the NEC All-Tournament Team.

Central claimed four out of 24 total spots, 12 for each the first and second teams. The Blue Devils also comprise four out of five representatives from the NEC to receive the honor. Malcolm was joined on the first team by Bryant's Lauren Guy.
