Women's Basketball Tops UMass, 78-69

Senior Jaclyn Babe scored a career-high 36 points as the Central Connecticut women's basketball team ran to a 78-69 victory over UMass on Tuesday night.  The Blue Devils (2-0) scored 16 points on fast breaks, which helped the team score a season-high 46 second half points.

The Blue Devils posted a shooting percentage of 46.2 in the first half and 45.5 in the second half.  The shooting percentage was boosted by Jaclyn Babe who connected on 12-of-15 field goal attempts and on 11-of-11 free throws.

As a team the Blue Devils hit 21-of-23 free throw attempts, good for a 91.3% mark.

Junior Jessica Babe grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and had a career-high 11 assists.

Defensively, Jaclyn Babe posted a career-high seven steals and Jessica Babe added four of her own.  Senior Kirsten Daamen blocked three shots to help the Blue Devils slow down the Minutewomen.

Babe is the first Blue Devil player to eclipse the 30-point mark since Gabriella Guegbelet scored 30 against Monmouth on Feburary 6, 2006.

"This is a really good win for us.  They are a good team, they are a tough team with good post players.  We did a lot of the things that we had to give ourselves a chance to win," head coach Beryl Piper said.

The Blue Devils led 32-22 following the first half and were actually outscored, 47-46, by the Minutewomen in the second half. 

Sophomore Kaley Watras (16), Daamen (10), junior Lauren Arbogast (9), Jessica Babe (5) and freshman Raven Makins (2) also contributed to CCSU's scoring.

The Blue Devils return to action on Friday night when they host the University of Hartford at 7 p.m.
