The Central Connecticut women's basketball team has named seniors Jaleen Thomas and Jessica Babe as captains for the 2013-14 season. Head coach Beryl Piper made the announcement this week after Babe and Thomas were selected by their teammates to serve in the position.
"I am very excited to have Jess Babe and Jaleen Thomas as captains for the 2013-14 school year," Piper said on Monday morning. "Both of these young ladies represent the University and the women's basketball program in a positive manner. They have up-beat attitudes and are hardworking individuals who are respected by their teammates and coaches."
Babe and Thomas joined the Blue Devils as freshmen and have contributed to 48 wins over the past three seasons. This past season, as juniors, both started for CCSU and helped the team to 16 wins and the #5 seed in the Northeast Conference Tournament.
Babe finished last season with a team-high 109 assists. She also led the squad in rebounding with 220 boards and a 7.3 rebounds/game average. Her 67 steals were second on the team and her 9.0 ppg mark was fourth. She has led the team in rebounds and assists each of the last two seasons.
Thomas finished tied for third on the team with 4.6 rebounds/game and averaged 2.5 points/game. She also made 31 steals and posted 20 assists on the season. Thomas led the Blue Devils to a 65-54 comeback victory over Wagner on February 18. She set career-highs for points and rebounds in the game with 15 and 19, respectively.
The 2013-14 women's basketball team will feature 10 returning letter winners, including three starters. Over the last five seasons, the Blue Devils are 78-73 and have a 48-42 record in NEC action.
