Women's Hoops Drops High Scoring Game at SFU

The Central Connecticut women's basketball team dropped a high scoring contest at Saint Francis U on Monday night.  The Blue Devils (9-15, 3-11 NEC) scored 41 second half points, but were unable to overcome the Red Flash (11-14, 9-5 NEC) offense, which scored 54 first half points in the 88-83 victory.

The Blue Devils outscored the Flash 41-34 in the second half behind 10 points from junior Kaley Watras and eight from senior Jessica Babe.

CCSU opened the second half with strong shooting from senior Brooke Bailey who scored five of the Blue Devils' first eight points to cut the deficit to single digits.

The Blue Devils final run came over the last 4:49 of the game as CCSU cut a 13-point Flash lead down to five points with a 15-7 run.  Sophomore Kayla Miller pulled the Blue Devils within three on a pair of free throws with 36 seconds remaining, but SFU hit four free throws to secure the victory.

CCSU had four players with double-digit points, led by Babe with 15.  She added 10 rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.  Sophomore Kayla Miller (15), Watras (13) and Bailey (10) also scored in double figures.

Miller's 15 points are a new career-high.  She was five-of-eight shooting and five-of-five at the free throw line.

Senior Jaleen Thomas came close to a double-double with eight points and 10 boards.  Thomas was two-of-four from the field and four-of-four at the free throw line.

As a team the Blue Devils posted a 74.3% (26-35) mark at the free throw line.  The Flash were 66.7% (22-33) at the line and 44.6% (29-65) from the field in the game.

Saint Francis senior Ali Williams led all players with 40 points and 15 rebounds.  Williams was 12-of-18 from the field, two-of-six from the three-point arc and 14-of-19 at the free throw line.

The Flash held a slight 46-44 advantage on the boards and controlled the lane offensively with a 40-26 adavntage on points in the paint.

The Blue Devils will return to action on Saturday, February 22 against Sacred Heart.  The Blue Devils will be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sport Day and will be holding their Play 4 Kay game.
