The Central Connecticut women's basketball team earned a 63-53 victory over Sacred heart on Saturday afternoon at Detrick Gym. The Blue Devils (10-15, 3-11 NEC) were led by 20 points from senior Jessica Babe. The Pioneers fall to 11-15 and 8-7 with the loss.
The Blue Devils opened up a 29-20 halftime lead behind a combined 23 points from Babe and Jaleen Thomas as well as junior Kaley Watras. Babe led the group with nine points on three-of-four shooting from the floor and three-of-four at the free throw line.
Thomas was a perfect three-of-three from the floor and hit her only free throw attempt total seven points. Watras was three-of-six shooting and also scored seven in the half.
The Blue Devils dominated the glass in the first half (28-14), especially on the offensive end where CCSU grabbed 11 boards.
Sacred Heart closed the deficit in the second half and actually tied the game with 10:08 left to play.
However, the Blue Devils battled back to rebuild a double-digit lead, which they increased to 13 points on three occasions.
Babe scored 11 points in the second half to lead CCSU. Thomas also continued her scoring with eight points.
Babe led all scorers with 20 points. Thomas finished with 15 points and Watras 12. Sophomore TeJahne Malone had a solid game with eight points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Thomas added 13 rebounds to register the double-double, while Babe pulled down nine boards.
The Blue Devils shot 74.1% (20-of-27) from the free throw line and 35.1% (20-of-57) from the floor in the game.
As a team the Blue Devils held a 52-28 rebounding advantage, including an impressive 22 offensive boards.
The Blue Devils return to action on Monday night against Wagner at 7 p.m.
