The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team earned its first victory of the season on Wednesday topping Siena by a score of 9-5. The Blue Devils (1-3) were led by junior Amanda Toke and senior Mackenzy Ryan who each had three points in the victory. The Saints fall to 1-4 with the loss.
The Blue Devils opened the game with back-to-back goals by Toke and freshman Elyse Malecki. Toke's goal came with 24:25 left in the half and Malecki's with 22:49.
Siena answered with a free position goal by Katie Maguire with 17:50 left in the half.
CCSU responded with its own free position goal at the 12:37 mark. This time it was junior Claire Healy scoring for the Blue Devils.
Siena netted the final goal of the half with 4:30 left in the period and the teams went to the break with Central leading 3-2.
The Blue Devils increased their lead to 4-2 less than four minutes into the second half on a goal by Ryan.
Unfortunately, Siena answered with back-to-back scores, tying the game at 4-4 with 22:56 left to play.
Over the next seven minutes CCSU and Siena traded goals to tie the game at 5-5. Sophomore Andrea Tarsi scored on a free position shot, her first goal of the season, and Siena's Alyssa Treanor answered with the tying score with 15:07 left to play.
The Blue Devils dominated over the final 15 minutes of play and closed the game on a 4-0 run.
Senior Betsy Vendel scored two straight goals to give CCSU a 7-5 lead. Ryan assisted on Vendel's first goal and Toke on the second. A minute after Vendel's second goal, Ryan passed to Toke for a goal to make it an 8-5 game. CCSU finished it off with an unassisted goal by Healy with 1:16 left in the game.
Defensively, CCSU was led by senior Ali Roche who had five ground balls and caused four turnovers. Junior Ashley Olhausen also had a strong game with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior Cierra Ward, Toke, Vendel and Tarsi each caused a pair of turnovers in the game.
Toke also had a team-high three draw controls.
In goal, sophomore Morgan Tullar had 10 saves, including six in the second half. The victory is the first of Tullar's career. She is 1-3 in goal this season.
The Blue Devils return to action on Friday against Longwood. CCSU and Longwood are scheduled for a 3 p.m. start time at Arute Field.
