Women's Soccer Tops UNH 1-0 on Sunday
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team (1-1-0) earned its first win of the season on Sunday over the University of New Hampshire (1-1-0) by the score of 1-0. Sophomore Alysa Christo scored the first goal of her career to lift the Blue Devils over the Wildcats in their second game of the season in the TD Bank Classic in Burlington, Vermont.
The two teams kicked off the contest evenly matched as they both compiled five shots a piece in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the net.
CCSU broke through in the 56th minute when senior Tori Sousa carried the ball along the endline and avoided a UNH defender. Sousa then passed to Christo in front of the net who needed a second effort to muscle it past the goalkeeper.
Christo, who missed last season due to injury, started her come back season on a high note as she netted the first goal of her career, which proved to be the game winner for the Blue Devils. Sousa's assist marks her second of the season.
Sophomore Nikki Turley got her second straight start in goal and recorded her first career victory and shutout as a Blue Devil. The clean slate came on two saves. One of which was on a breakaway in the first half by a UNH forward where Turley came forward out of the goal and deflected the attempt.
The Blue Devils finished with 11 total shots with five of them being on target. CCSU's defense proved tough as UNH could only muster seven total shots, two of which were on goal. Senior and sophomore midfielders Danica Foglio and Morgan Santoro both finished the day with two shots and one shot on goal a piece.
Three Blue Devils were recognized for their play on the weekend and were named to the TD Bank All-Tournament Team. Sousa, Santoro, and Charlie Branch received the honors. Sousa finished the tournament with two assists and six total shots. Santoro contributed five shots, two of which were on goal, finishing the tournament with a .400 shot on goal percentage. Branch also totaled five shots and found the back of the net on one to add a goal to her resume for the all-tournament team.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team returns to action this Thursday, Aug. 28 in its home opener against the University of Hartford. The game will take place on the CCSU soccer field at 7 P.M. Fans who are not in attendance can watch the game live for free on http://necfrontrow.com.
