The Central Connecticut women's soccer team defeated Temple 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia, PA. CCSU got two goals from senior captain Charlotte Maurer and the Blue Devils held onto an early to turn back a second half charge from the Owls.
Central is now 3-1-1 on the season, while Temple is 3-2 overall.
Maurer opened the scoring after she fired the ball at the left side of the net off a penalty kick at the 24:37 mark.
Towards the end of the first half, junior Carla Jackson passed the ball to freshman Abbey Chase who ripped a shot past the Temple goalkeeper in the bottom left corner to make it 2-0. It was Chase's first career goal and Jackson's second assist in as many games.
The Owls tried to rally, scoring early in the second half at the 51:34 mark. Morgan Morocco made a pass from the baseline to Emma Wilkins who took a shot inside the box cutting the lead 2-1.
The Blue Devils would push the game out of reach after they responded with a header from Maurer off a pass from senior Danielle Pearse making it 3-1 with just under 30 minutes remaining.
Senior Ashley Cavanaugh made a big save at the 74:12 mark as Temple was not able to convert off a penalty kick. She finished with seven saves in goal for the Blue Devils.
Central is back in action on Thursday, Sept. 6, with a 7:00 p.m. game against the University of Rhode Island in New Britain, CT.
