Atkinson and Maurer Score in Women's Soccer's 2-1 Win Over Fairleigh Dickinson

The Central Connecticut women's soccer team beat Fairleigh Dickinson 2-1 and picked up its second Northeast Conference win on Friday in New Britain, CT. The scorers of the night were senior Charlotte Maurer and sophomore Tess Atkinson.

Central improves to 8-1-2 and 2-0 in the NEC with the win. Fairleigh Dickinson is now 2-7-3, 0-1-1 in league play.

Senior Danielle Pearse set the ball high and it lingered just inside the box where Maurer was able to sneak a shot to the bottom left of the net just past the keeper, scoring her sixth goal of the season.

Later in the second half at the 73:47 mark, sophomore Jenna Rae Covello notched her first assist of the season when she found classmate Atinkson in the center of the box. Atinkson fired the ball over the goalie at the top right corner of the net to score her first goal of the year.

Noam Kedem would score the only goal for the Knights off a touch pass from Julia Shea with less than five minutes in the game.

Senior Ashley Cavanaugh ended the game with four saves in the goal for the Blue Devils. Amanda Fitzgerald finished with seven saves for the Knights.

Central returns to action Sunday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. when it travels to Staten Island, NY to play Wagner. CCSU is 5-0-2 at home this season and 11-0-2 at home in its last 13 games dating to last season. The Blue Devils are 17-1-2 in their last 20 NEC home games.
