The Central Connecticut women's track and field team competed at the 18th Annual Monmouth Season Opener this weekend in West Long Branch, NJ. Junior Elizabeth Eberhardt broke the CCSU record in the 3,000 meter run with her time of 9:58.89. She ousted the previous record set in 2000 by Heather Gardiner of 10:02.89.
The Blue Devils earned three top-five performances on the weekend including an ECAC qualifying high jump from sophomore Ronea Saunders. The CCSU record holder cleared 1.72 meters, surpassing the ECAC qualifying standard of 1.71 meters, for first place.
Junior Shelby Tuttle, also a CCSU record holder, placed second in the 100 meter hurdle event, registering a collegiate personal-best time of 14.43. She was followed by freshman Alyssa Gonzalez who finished the race in 16.15 seconds for 11th place.
Freshman Ally Gates claimed the bronze in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 12:17.05 in her first career outdoor outing.
Also earning a third-place finish was the 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Saunders, senior Rachel Dombroski, junior Cassey Griffith and sophomore Chantelle Deer. The team crossed the finish line in 50.54 seconds.
Griffith and Dombroski also competed in the 100 meter dash where they each earned top-ten honors. Griffiths, who placed fifth, crossed the finish line in 12.66. She was followed by Dombroski in 13.05, good for 10th.
Griffith topped the Blue Devils in the 200 meter dash field as well, earning fifth place overall with her time of 26.37. She was followed by Saunders in ninth (26.61), Dombroski in 10th (26.67), Gonzalez in 11th (26.83) and Deer in 13th with a time of 27.11.
In the 400m, Tuttle placed 16th out of 46 with a time of 1:01.19 and was followed by Deer in 20th with a time of 1:01.52.
Sophomore Taylor LePage placed eighth out of 47 in the 800m with her time of 2:25.61 and crossed the finish line in 5:03.26 in the 1,500m run.
In the field events, freshman Chelse Terry finished in the top ten in the discus throw, registering a distance of 37.43 meters. She also earned a collegiate personal-best distance of 42.56 in the hammer throw competition, for which she earned 11th place.
Terry took 13th out of 24 in the shot put with a 10.48 meter mark.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Saturday, April 6, at the AIC Yellow Jacket Invitational in Springfield, MA.
