Volleyball Splits Matches Saturday at Georgetown Classic

The Central Connecticut volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday in the Georgetown Classic at McDonough Arena in Washington, DC. The Blue Devils swept Rider, 3-0, in the day's first match before falling to Georgetown in the afternoon.   

GAME #1 INFORMATION 

Score: CCSU 3, Rider 0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-11) 

Records: CCSU (1-1), Rider (0-3)

QUOTE 

"Our setters did a great job of locating the ball for our hitters this morning," said head coach Linda Sagnelli. "We were consistently tough from the service line, forcing Rider out of system which made our transition much easier." 

KEY MOMENTS  

  • CCSU hit .255 as a team, with junior Emma Henderson leading the way with seven kills, while senior Erin McDermott had 13 assists in directing the offense. CCSU recorded eight service aces in the match and had 48 digs. 

  • The only time the Blue Devils trailed in the matchup was at 1-0 in the third set, but three straight points by the Blue Devils would give them the lead for good. 

  • Central scored the first four points of the first set, with Henderson serving three of the points and McCreath recording two kills. 

  • The Blue Devils had a run of nine straight points in the second set to go ahead, 24-7. McDermott served during the run and three different players recorded kills. 

  • In the third set, CCSU outscored Rider, 14-4, to pull away after leading 8-5 in the early-going. 

NUMBER TO KNOW 

4 – Junior Samantha McCreath had four serve aces for the Blue Devils, along with five kills and four digs. 

NOTES  

  • The Blue Devils have had at least 48 digs in four straight matches dating back to last season. 

  • Senior Morgan Woycik hit a team-high .417 while recording six kills in the match. 

  • Henderson added a team-high 14 digs to go with her seven kills and two blocks. 

  • Senior Madelyn Kaprelyan had 10 digs with seven assists, six kils and two digs.

Score: CCSU 3, Rider 0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-15)

KEY MOMENTS  

  • The Blue Devils led 17-15 in the opening game, but the Hoyas would roll off three straight points. After a kill by Kaprelyan tied the set, the Hoyas took the lead for good with three straight points. 

  • Central scored the first three points in the second game, but Georgetown used a run of six straight points to take an 8-5 lead and did not trail again. 

  • CCSU scored five straight points and took an 8-5 lead on a kill by Woycik. CCSU would maintain the lead until the Hoyas scored eight unanswered points to go ahead for good at 16-10.  

NUMBER TO KNOW 

1 – The Blue Devils had 0 blocking errors against the Hoyas and committed just one blocking error in three matches. 

NOTES  

  • The Blue Devils have had at least 48 digs in five straight matches dating back to last season. 

  • McCreath had a team-high nine kills with nine digs, narrowly missing a double-double. 

  • Woycik had seven kills in the match and hit a team-best .435 on the weekend. 

  • Junior Ashlyn Eisenga had a team-high 14 digs against the Hoyas. 

  • Woycik and Eisenga were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Central will be back in action at UConn Challenge next weekend and will face Boston College on Friday.
