Smith, Jr. and Jones Take NEC Men's Basketball Weekly Honors
Darin Smith, Jr. and Roddy Jones of the Central Connecticut men's basketball team earned Influxer/NEC Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, it was announced on Monday. The duo helped CCSU to a pair of wins last week.
Smith averaged 28.5 points and 3.0 rebounds while shooting .484 from the field and .375 from three-point range last week. He was also a perfect 1.000 (24-of-24) at the foul line in two wins. He opened the week with 40 points in 33 minutes of action in a win at New Haven. He shot 13-of-20 from the field and 11-for-11 at the foul line. He would account for 14 points in the first six minutes of the second half to help CCSU go ahead by 15. Smith became the first Blue Devil to score 40 points in a game since Kyle Vinales had 42 at Wagner on Feb. 14, 2013. On Saturday, he had a game-high 17 points at FDU and went 12-for-12 at the foul line in the second half, all coming in the last 3:10 to break a 47-47 tie.
Jones was named Rookie of the Week for the second straight week after averaging 6.0 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 1.0 steals. He was 4-of-7 (.571) from three-point range and had 12 points on 4-of-5 from the arc at New Haven whe he hit his first three threes of the night.
The Blue Devils host Le Moyne on Thursday before traveling to Chicago State.
