Winkler Earns NCAA Finals Berth In Javelin
Placed ninth at East Region to secure the program's first-ever NCAA Championship finalist berth
For the first time in program history the Central Connecticut State track and field team has an NCAA Finalist in outdoor track and field. Colin Winkler placed ninth in the javelin at the NCAA East Region Championship on Wednesday, punching his ticket to Eugene.
Winkler was in the fourth of four flights on Wednesday. As that final flight was warming-up inclement weather hit and the event was delayed from mid afternoon to a late night start. Winkler stood in 17th place after the second of three throws. On his final effort he thre 68.18m to vault his way into ninth place and earn a national championship berth.
The javelin field consisted of 48 competitors, who each had three throws. The top-12 finishers advanced to the finals, June 11th at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Winkler is the second member of the CCSU Cross Country/Track & Field program to earn an NCAA Championship berth this season, joining Brooke Morabito who competed in cross country. Aaron Radden was an NCAA Finalist in indoor track and field in 2012.
