Freshman Aaron Berardino impacted the game in multiple ways during his first contest with the Blue Devils. The Windsor, CT, native saw time on defense and special teams in Central's season opening loss to Stony Brook on Saturday, but his performance earned him recognition as the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week.
Berardino made four solo tackles in the loss, but his biggest contribution was an interception that halted a Stony Brook drive.
With the Blue Devils trailing, 21-3, and in need of a big play, the Berardino delivered. He picked off a Stony Brook pass at Central's own 30-yard line with 6:47 remaining in the second quarter. Not only did the play stop the Seawolves, but on the ensuing possession the Blue Devils punched in their first touchdown of the season.
Berardino, a former Connecticut All-State selection during high school, also returned kick offs for Central on Saturday.
A standout wide receiver in high school, Berardino provides versitility for the Blue Devils.
Berardino and the Blue Devils will host Lehigh on Saturday in the first game at the newly expanded Arute Field.
