Smith Takes NEC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week Honors
Central Connecticut men's basketball standout Darin Smith, Jr. was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week by the the league on Monday. Jayden Brown was also recognized with a spot on the league's Prime Performers list.
Smith continued his strong start to the season in a 1-1 week for Central. He averaged 17.0 ppg and 4.0 rpg last week, while shooting 63.2 percent from the field. He scored a career-high 23 points and hit 6-of-9 three-pointers against Vermont State Johnson. He became the first CCSU freshman to score 20+ points in a game since Myles Baker on Feb. 20, 2020. He had his third double-digit scoring game with 11 points against Northeastern to go with three rebounds. Smith has won back-to-back NEC Rookie of the Week honors.
Brown averaged 15.0 ppg and 3.0 rpg last week, while shooting 66.7 percent from the field and 42.9 percent on three-pointers. He had 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting in 18 minutes against Vermont State Johnson and then scored a team-high 15 points with four rebounds against Northeastern.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Sacred Heart.
