The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team fell to Mount St. Mary's by a score of 5-4 on Friday afternoon at Arute Field. The Blue Devils (9-7, 7-1 NEC) out-scored the Mountaineers 4-1 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome a 4-0 halftime deficit.
The Blue Devils were led by senior Betsy Vendel's three assists. Vendel assisted on CCSU's final three goals of the game.
Mount St. Mary's (7-9, 6-2 NEC) built a 4-0 halftime lead with a team offensive effort, which focused on ball control and maintaining possession.
In the second half, freshman Falynn McCartney scored an unassisted goal with 21:05 left to play. The goal was the 13th of the season for McCartney.
Mount St. Mary's answered three minutes later with a goal by Hannah Gutcher to take a 5-1 lead.
From that point CCSU controlled most of the action. With 12:18 left to play in the game Vendel passed to freshman Elyse Malecki for a goal. The score remanned 5-2 for more than eight minutes following Malecki's goal.
With 3:47 left in the game, Vendel passed to senior Mackenzy Ryan for a goal to make it 5-3. Two minutes and 10 seconds later, with just 1:37 left to play, junior Amanda Toke scored on an assist by Vendel to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Mount won the ensuing draw control and held the ball for more than a minute. With less than 30 seconds left in the game, Ryan caused a turnover and scooped up the loose ball and began heading toward the Mountaineer goal. Unfortunately, Ryan's attempt was thwarted by the Mountaineers and a final chance by McCartney was also unsuccessful.
Senior Ali Roche led the CCSU defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Andrea Tarsi also had a strong game with four ground balls and a caused turnover.
Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Tullar made five saves and falls to 9-7 on the season with the loss.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Sunday at noon. The game will be senior day for the Class of 2013 and the winner will earn the #1 seed in next weekend's Northeast Conference Tournament.
