Women's Track & Field 9th at URI Invite

The Central Connecticut women's track and field team placed ninth out of 11 teams at the University of Rhode Island Coaches Tribute Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Devils were led by junior Elizabeth Eberhardt, who placed third in a field of 21 competitors in the 1,000m run. She crossed the finish line in 3:00.22, setting a new collegiate personal-best time.

Central team members also competed at the Armory Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, a meet that draws several of the top teams in the country. Sophomore Ronea Saunders competed in the high jump championship and achieved a new collegiate personal-best height of 1.78 meters, besting her previous high mark of 1.75 which she set at the NEICAAA Indoor Championships last year.

In addition to Eberhardt's performance, the Blue Devils also boasted one additional top-five ranking and six top-10 performances at URI.

Junior Shelby Tuttle, who currently holds the CCSU record in the 60m hurdles, placed fourth in the event, crossing the finish line with a time of 9.02.

In the 500m dash, sophomore Chantelle Deer placed sixth for the Blue Devils, crossing the finish line in 1:20.54. Deer was followed by freshman Jenean McCalla who placed eighth with a time of 1:22.26.

Senior Rachel Dombroski placed seventh in the 200m dash (26.64) and was followed by freshman Alyssa Gonzalez in 10th, crossing the line in 26.93.

The field events also yielded a top-10 finish from freshman Chelse Terry who registered a distance of 14.7 meters in the weight throw competition for seventh. Freshman Alessandra Caponigro also competed in the event. She placed 16th registering a distance of 12.34 meters.

Terry also competed in the shot put. She threw for 10.22 meters earning 21st place in the event.

In the 60m dash, Central achieved an 11th-place performance from Dombroski (8.28) followed by senior Dara Edge who placed 13th in the event, crossing the finish line in 8.33.

Other notable performances for the Blue Devils include sophomore Alessandra Salmon who placed 14th of 27 in the 400m (1:02.28), senior Shannon McBride who placed 18th of 37 in the one mile run (5:22.80) and freshman Ally Gates who placed 21st with a time of 2:28.69 in the 800m run.

The Blue Devils will return to action on Saturday, February 9, for the NEC Indoor Championships at Prince George's Complex in Landover, MD.
