Women's Track & Field NEC Bound
The Central Connecticut women's track and field teams are set to compete at the Northeast Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, MD. Competition is set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and continue through Sunday.
Last season, the Blue Devils placed sixth in NEC competition, preceded by Monmouth, LIU Brooklyn, Sacred Heart, St. Francis (PA) and Wagner.
Central posted two individual event championships at the 2012 NEC indoor competition, one in the one mile run and one in the distance medley relay. The distance medley relay event was topped by a team consisting of juniors Elizabeth Eberhardt and Shavonne Dash as well as former seniors Alasia Griebel and Amanda Asaro. Griebel, a current CCSU assistant coach, also topped the one mile run event.
Last year's pair of individual championships were the first for CCSU since 2003.
So far this season, the Blue Devils have broken four CCSU indoor records and claimed two NEC weekly awards. Sophomore Ronea Saunders, who enjoyed a standout freshman season, has picked up where she left off, claiming the NEC Field Athlete of the Week award twice this season as well as broken her own CCSU indoor record in the high jump with 1.78 meters (5' 10").
Junior Krizstina Dearborn broke two CCSU records of her own in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meter run events posting times of 10:08.33 and 17:29.59, respectively. Junior Shelby Tuttle shattered the CCSU record in the 60 meter hurdles in her first meet as a Blue Devil on Jan. 5, she then set the record again with a time of 8.91 on Jan. 12.
