Central Connecticut softball's pitcher Laura Messina was honored with her second-consecutive NEC weekly award of the season this week, the league announced Monday. Messina was named NEC Pitcher of the Week for her efforts in the cicle against Holy Cross on Wednesday and Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday. This is the third time this season that Messina has been tabbed pitcher or co-pitcher of the week.
This week, Messina continued her stellar sophomore campaign as she added three wins and two more shutouts to her already commanding totals. She posted one shutout at Holy Cross and another in the sweep over NEC foe Fairleigh Dickinson. She now boasts nine shutouts for the season and 16 in her career.
This week, she posted a 0.35 ERA, struck out 28 batters, and allowed only three walks and one earned run in 20 innings.
Recently, Messina also earned the title of the winningest pitcher in CCSU history. She now holds the record with 41 career wins. She also holds the CCSU career strikeout record (396), shutout record (16) and most innings pitched (397.1).
Messina is also currently ranked ninth in the nation in shutouts and 16th in walks allowed per seven innings.
