The Central Connecticut softball team will kick off NEC Tournament action Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in Moon Township, PA against Monmouth. For the first time in CCSU history, the Blue Devils have earned the title of Co-NEC Regular Season Champions. The 2013 squad has broken the CCSU single-season win record with 32 wins headed into the tournament and has earned the most conference wins in the history of the program with 16.
"The team is ready to go," Head Coach Jeff Franquet said. "We're just going to take it one game at a time and hopefully we can take care of business." CLICK HERE to see Franquet and the Blue Devils talk about the upcoming tournament.
During the regular season, the Blue Devils traveled to Monmouth to play the Hawks in West Long Branch, NJ where they were handed their only NEC sweep of the season. Central is 2-6 with the Hawks under Franquet and 4-14 since 2004.
The first game in this season's doubleheader against the Hawks ended in an extra-inning loss for Central. The two teams remained scoreless throughout a full nine innings of play until the tie-breaker rule came into effect. The Blue Devils placed a runner on second, but were unable to drive her in. They didn't get another chance as the Hawks' placed runner was driven in in the bottom of the 10th to break the deadlock and take the game 1-0.
The Blue Devils fell to Monmouth 5-2 in game two.
Following the CCSU vs. Monmouth match-up in the double-elimination tournament, #1 Robert Morris will face #4 LIU Brooklyn in game two. The winners of both games will play at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The two losing teams will play at 1 p.m. on Friday.
