Baseball Tops UHart, Hickey Gets 500

The Central Connecticut baseball team improved to 25-24 on the season with a victory over Hartford on Wednesday afternoon.  The win is the 500th in the collegiate career of head coach Charlie Hickey.  The Blue Devils topped the Hawks (16-34) by a score of 9-4 behind seven strong innings from sophomore Jesse Frawley.

Hickey is now 500-384-4 in 17 combined seasons with CCSU and Providence College.  He is CCSU's all-time winningest baseball coach with 394 career victories with the Blue Devils.

Frawley pitched seven innings to earn his second win of the season.  He scattered eight hits and allowed just one run.  He struck out two and did not walk a batter.

The Hawks were able to score three runs off junior Nick Boyd in the eighth, but sophomore Dominic Severino came in and worked out of further trouble. Severino did not allow a hit while pitching the final 1.2 innings of the game.

The Blue Devils scored a single run in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth.  CCSU added single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings.

Junior Dylan DelaCruz connected for his fifth home run in the last five games and finished the day two-for-five at the plate.

Senior Nick Palmisano was three-for-four at the plate and drove in three of Central's nine runs.

Senior Chris Renzoni, junior J.P. Sportman, junior Anthony Turgeon and Severino all had two hits in the game.  Renzoni drove in a pair of runs, while Sportman and McIntyre each had one RBI.

The Blue Devils host Mount St. Mary's at the CCSU Baseball Field this weekend in an important NEC series.

Central is still alive for the fourth and final playoff spot in next week's NEC Tournament.  The Blue Devils need a sweep of the Mount, along with some other help in the league, in order to qualify for the four-team tournament.
