Wright Named NEC Defensive Player Of The Week
Joined as a prime performer by Clark, Olson and Thomas
Central Connecticut State junior football player Malachai Wright was tabbed as the Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. The linebacker spearheaded a tenacious defensive effort in the Blue Devils win over Fordham.
Wright, a native of West Haven, CT, was one of numerous player of the week candidates from the CCSU defense. He recorded a game-high 3.5 tackles for loss in the game as the Blue Devils combined for 13 TFL's, the most in a game in the FCS this season. Wright had a sack, a quarterback hurry and seven total tackles in the victory.
The Blue Devils had three players earn NEC Prime Performer accolades on Monday, Kimal Clark led all players with 13 tackles, six of them solo. Vince Thomas had a pair of fumble recoveries on special teams, including one for the games first touchdown. Also recognized, was quarterback Brady Olson, who threw a pair of touchdown passes for the CCSU offense.
The Blue Devils defeated Fordham 33-3 in the 2024 home opener to improve to 1-1 on the season. The defense finished with 13 TFL's and 9.0 sacks, both single-game team highs in the first two weeks of FCS play.
CCSU will open Northeast Conference play this week, travelling to Loretto, PA for a game at Saint Francis U. The Saturday, September 14th game will kick off at noon on NEC Front Row.
