Coleman Named NEC Football Rookie of the Week
Clark, Howard, Turner and Toatley all named NEC Prime Performers
Central Connecticut State redshirt freshman Wayne Coleman was named the Northeast Conference Football Rookie of the Week on Monday.
The Blue Devils had four players named as NEC Prime Performers following Saturday's win over Mercyhurst. Kimal Clark and Dan Toatley were honored on the defensive side of the ball, and Elijah Howard and Jadon Turner were recognized on the offensive side.
Coleman, a graduate of Archbishop Stepinac High School, recorded a career-best 2.5 tackles for loss in the game. Among those TFL's was a sack. He contributed four total tackles in the victory, including two solo stops. Coleman is tied for 11th in the NEC with his 0.75 TFL's per game, which is third on the Blue Devils roster through six games.
Howard and Turner are the first Blue Devil duo to both rush for 100+ yards in the same game since Howard and Malik Thomas did it versus Delaware State last season. Both runners had season-high days, with Howard racking up 169 yards on the ground, while Turner carried for 114 yards, including a touchdown.
Clark was recognized after recording 10 tackles, for his third double-digit tackle game of the season, to go along with two pass breakups. Clark leads the NEC at 10.5 tackles per game, which is fourth-best in FCS.
Toatley finished with three tackles, with two sacks and a forced fumble. He also recorded a QB hurry on Saturday in the win.
CCSU, 3-3 on the year and 1-0 in NEC play, concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule this week, with a game at Ivy League member Dartmouth.
