Baseball Takes Pair from Delaware State on Saturday
Jacob Hines pitched CCSU to the game one win.
The Central Connecticut State baseball swept both games of a NEC doubleheader against Delaware State on Saturday in New Britain, CT. The Blue Devils won 14-2 in the first game and 13-2 in the second.
Jacob Hines and Zach Worzel turned in a pair of solid pitching outings and were powered by strong offensive days to lift the Blue Devils

GAME 1 KEY MOMENTS
- Central Connecticut responded to giving up a run in the top of the first by batting around and pushing across six runs. With two runners on base, Frankie Ferrentino would double and drive in a run to tie the game. Gianno Merlonghi followed with a two-run single to make it 3-1. Following a single and a fly out, Brandon O'Neill singled through the middle to drive in another run and two batters later, Antonio Ducatelli would single for the second time in the inning to drive in two runs and make it 6-1.
- CCSU tacked on three runs in the third inning. A pair of singles would put runners on for Ducatelli who would clear the bags with a double. He scored two batters later when Nick Fox singled to bring him home and make it 9-1.
- In the fourth inning, O'Neill would double to score Gabe Pitts with one out. With the bases loaded, Louis Jordan forced in a run with a walk and Fox followed with a sac fly to make it 12-1. Central would load the bases again with two outs and Merlonghi singled through the right side to plate two more runs.
- After allowing a run in the top of the first, Hines would retire 13 straight batters at one point and allowed just two hits. The Hornets scratched out a run in the sixth inning, but would not be able to muster any more offense.
GAME 2 KEY MOMENTS
- Rosnell Lewis led off with a solo homerun in the top of the first in game two for Delaware St.
- CCSU would post three runs in each of the opening three frames. In the first, with runners on second and third, Ferrentino doubled into left field to drive in two runs. After he moved to third on a single, Ferrentino would score on a single by Danny Witters to make it 3-1.
- Gabe Tanous singled with one out in the second and would score on a double by Antonio Ducatelli to make it 4-1. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Ferrentino drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Merlonghi singled to plate another run to push the lead to 6-1.
- The Hornets got a run in the top of the third before CCSU tacked on three more in the bottom of the inning. A pair of one out singles would set the table for Ducatelli, who singled and drove in a run. After a wild pitch scored a run, Fox's sac fly pushed the lead to 9-2.
- Central put runners on via an error and a single in the fifth before Fox tripled and drove in two runs. He would score on a Ferrentino single to make it 12-2. Donte Valentine drove in a run with a groundout in the sixth to close out the scoring.
- Worzel would only allow two hits after the leadoff homerun in the first inning, while Richie Kerstetter came on for the final 2.0 innings to close out the game.
NOTES
- Hines tossed a 7.0 inning complete game and scattered just four hits, while striking out three.
- Worzel allowed one earned run over 5.0 innings, on just three hits.
- Ducatelli had five hits, five runs and six RBIs in the doubleheader.
- Merlonghi went 6-for-9 with five RBIs in two games.
- O'Neill had four hits with five runs and two RBIs.
- Tanous had four hits and three runs on the day.
- Fox had four hits and five RBIs in the twinbill.
- Ferrentino was 3-for-6 with five RBIs.
- CCSU leads the series, 14-5, all-time and has won seven straight.
